Weedless Rigging for Rough Ground Sea Bass

Rough ground is where the big bass live. Rocky reef, kelp beds, boulder fields, and broken ground hold fish — but they'll also eat your lures alive if you're not rigged correctly. Weedless rigging is the solution: presentations that get your soft plastic into the snags where the fish are, without leaving your tackle behind.

Here's a breakdown of the three main weedless rigs for rough ground sea bass fishing, and when to use each one.

Why Weedless Rigging Matters on Rough Ground

A standard exposed jig head over rough ground is a snag waiting to happen. Every time your lure touches the bottom — and it will — you risk losing it. Weedless rigs protect the hook point, letting you fish confidently through kelp, over boulders, and into the structure where bass are holding. More casts in the zone means more fish.

Slow Down — These Lures Are Built for It

All Labrax Mafia lures are designed to be retrieved slowly — keeping pace with the flow of the water you're fishing, not fighting against it. The action, the profile, and the materials are all optimised for a slow, deliberate retrieve that works with the current to imitate a wounded or dying baitfish being carried naturally through the water. Resist the urge to speed up. The slower you fish these lures over rough ground, the more time they spend in the strike zone, and the more convincing the presentation. If in doubt, slow down further.

Rig 1: Texas Rig (Weightless) — The Weedless Standard

The Texas rig is the most weedless presentation available. The hook point is buried in the body of the lure, making it virtually snag-proof through even the heaviest kelp and boulder fields.

How to rig it:

  1. Use a BKK Permalock 5/0 (unweighted) for the Omerta 150 or Vendetta Craw, or a 4/0 for the Soldato 120.
  2. Screw the corkscrew fitting on the BKK Permalock into the nose of the lure — this locks the lure head securely to the hook shank and keeps it straight on the cast and retrieve.
  3. Bring the hook point through the belly of the lure, then rotate 180° and bury the point back into the body so it sits flush — this is what makes it weedless.
  4. Check the lure is straight. A twisted lure will spin on the retrieve and kill the action.

Best for: Kelp beds, heavy weed, shallow boulder fields, and any mark where a standard hook would snag immediately. Slow retrieve, keeping pace with the current and letting the lure sink into the gaps.

Note: BKK Permalock hooks are not suitable for the Morsetto 115 or Capo 150 — use the rigs below for those lures.

Rig 2: Belly Weighted Hook — Weedless, Shallow Presentation

The belly weighted hook is a weedless rig designed for shallow ground and shallow water presentations. The small amount of added weight gives the lure a natural head-down orientation without pulling it deep — keeping it in the strike zone just above the snags. This is the go-to weedless rig for the Morsetto 115 and Capo 150 over shallow rough ground.

How to rig it:

  1. For the Morsetto 115, use a belly weighted 4/0 hook with 2g. For the Capo 150, use a 6/0 with 3–5g.
  2. Rig the same as the Texas rig above — hook point buried in the lure body.
  3. The belly weight sits underneath the lure, giving it a subtle head-down tilt that imitates a baitfish holding just above the bottom.

Best for: Shallow reef, rocky marks, and snaggy ground. Retrieve slowly, keeping pace with the flow of the water and letting the lure work just above the structure. Pause regularly to let it drop back down.

Rig 3: Decoy VJ36 Jig Head — Weedless Precision

The Decoy VJ36 is a weedless jig head designed specifically for soft plastic fishing over rough ground. Its hook geometry and precision balance keep the hook riding upward, protecting the point from snags while maintaining a true, natural swimming action through the water column.

How to rig it:

  1. Choose your weight: 5g for shallow water and slow retrieves, 7g for mid-water and moderate tides, 11g for stronger tidal flow.
  2. Thread the lure onto the jig head hook, keeping it straight and centred.
  3. Fish it with a slow lift-and-drop retrieve, keeping pace with the flow of the water — lift the rod tip to bring the lure off the bottom, pause, then let it drop slowly back down into the strike zone.

Best for: Rough and mixed ground where you need depth and control without sacrificing a weedless presentation. Use the Morsetto 115 or Capo 150 on the VJ36 for best results.

Choosing the Right Rig for the Mark

  • Heavy kelp / boulder fields (Omerta 150, Soldato 120, Vendetta Craw) — Texas rig (BKK Permalock with corkscrew fitting). Maximum weedless protection.
  • Shallow reef / snaggy ground (Morsetto 115, Capo 150) — Belly weighted hook. Weedless, shallow presentation just above the structure.
  • Rough and mixed ground (Morsetto 115, Capo 150) — Decoy VJ36 jig head. Weedless with precision balance and depth control.

The Bottom Line

Rough ground bass fishing is a game of confidence. The right weedless rig lets you fish where other anglers won't — into the kelp, over the boulders, and through the structure where the biggest fish are holding. Rig up correctly, keep pace with the flow, and trust the lure to do the work.
